Snowbirds' Guide To Portable Mobility Scooters
Find out why portable mobility
scooters may be perfect for you (whether you travel or
not).
If you live in an area that experiences the snow and icy winds of winter, the idea
of escaping this kind of weather for at least awhile, can be very enticing. That’s especially true if you use a
personal mobility scooter to get around. But if your home scooter is too large to bring along on vacation, do what
many other snowbirds do and invest in one of the many portable
mobility scooters that are on the market today.
With a portable mobility scooter, you can easily transport your scooter even if
you have limited space in your vehicle. That’s because this type of scooter is designed with the traveler in
mind.
Unlike the scooter you use at home, travel mobility scooters are designed
to be portable and easy to bring along. This is accomplished with a few tweaks in the design. Generally they are
more compact in size, lighter in weight, and many of them even fold.
Even though they are built to a smaller scale, a portable mobility scooter does
not forego comfort or safety. The most important part of a scooter in terms of comfort is the seat. It should be
cushioned and well supported, as well as being roomy enough to accommodate your size.
Not only are they smaller in size, they are also much lighter. This is important
so that they can be easily lifted in and out of a vehicle by a single person. Try doing that with a regular
mobility scooter.
Some of these scooters can be folded, while others can be taken apart for
transporting purposes. There are advantages to both. Both will easily fit into a trunk or the back of a minivan or
SUV, although a scooter that can be disassembled may be easier to tuck into a closely packed trunk.
The main advantage of a scooter that can be broken down into several pieces is
that each individual piece will weigh less than a folding scooter. The disadvantage is that it has to be
re-assembled before use.
A folding scooter takes up little space when not in use. If your accommodations
are limited in space, then folding scooters can be easily tucked into a corner or closet. Then when you are ready
to use it, it takes only a second to unfold and it’s ready for use.
As a snowbird, you’ll no doubt want to be out and about both indoors and outside,
enjoying your time out of the cold. Portable mobility scooters are available in both 3 and 4 wheel
models.
While three wheel mobility scooters are easier to maneuver in smaller spaces, some
people prefer the added stability of the four wheel scooter, particularly for outdoor use.
Portable mobility scooters are of course great for snowbirds, but they can also come in handy when you’re back home.
With a portable scooter, you’ll be able to leave your regular scooter at home and use the portable model when you
want to get out and about.
