Mobility Scooter Accessories

Using the right mobility scooter accessories can make your scooter even better.

Mobility scooters don’t have to be just a way to get you from one place to another.  So, there’s no reason why you can’t customize your ride to suit your needs and likes. You may be surprised at just how many mobility scooter accessories there are to choose from.

First and foremost is to choose the scooter that is right for you. What you go with will depend upon how you plan to use your scooter. A scooter that has been designed primarily for use indoors will have different design features than a scooter that is made to be used outside.

If you only want a basic model, it’s available. But if you’d like something a little sportier, you can get that too. There are great new accessories to make this happen. These are in the form of interchangeable colored panels which you can use to easily customize the look of your scooter.

If you plan on spending time outdoors, and don’t want to be held back by the rain, a very useful accessory is a canopy top for your mobility scooter. It's so much better than trying to use an umbrella.

No matter what type of mobility scooter you choose, comfort should be a priority. You’ll want one that can be adjusted to fit you. Both seat and armrests should be fully adjustable.

The seat should adjust up and down, as well as forward and backwards. You don’t want to feel cramped but you also don’t want to stretch to reach the controls.

The armrests should also be fully customizable. That way they can be moved closer or further from the seat or even removed if necessary.

Most electric mobility scooters will have good lumbar and lateral support built into the seat. For even greater comfort, choose a model that is designed ergonomically. This is an especially good thing if you tend to feel stiff and sore if you sit for too long.

Let’s look at a few other popular accessories available for mobility scooters.

For use outdoors, it may be a good idea to get working headlights and tail lights, instead of the standard reflectors. It’s a good safety feature to have when traveling after dark. You might also want to attach a light colored, reflective flag or sticker to your scooter for added security. Both lights and flags are widely available.

You can outfit your mobility scooter to carry medical equipment, like walkers, portable oxygen tanks, or canes to name a few.

You can also get virtually any type of pack, basket, or pouch; all of which easily attach to your scooter. These carriers make it easy to carry almost anything you need to bring along. In fact, you won’t even have to leave your pet at home.

You can now add locking compartments to those scooters that don't come with them. These compartments are well worth getting. They allow you to securely carry your purse, wallet, mail, banking transactions, and more, while traveling from one place to another.

With the wide variety of mobility scooter accessories available, it’s easy to personalize your personal mobility scooter.
