Electric Mobility Scooter - What To Ask Yourself Before You Buy
Buying an electric mobility scooter can be challenging and you want to get it right. Here are 7
questions designed to help you make your decision.
If you’re in the market for an electric mobility scooter, you will certainly want to make sure
that you get one with all the features you need. Ask yourself a few of the following questions so you can find the
right personal mobility scooter for you.
1. Where will you mainly use your mobility scooter? In general, three wheeled scooters are preferred
for indoor use while four wheeled scooters are the scooter of choice for outside use. Here’s why.
For scooters used primarily indoors, maneuverability is probably the most important feature to consider. It’s
easier to move around and make turns in areas with limited space with a three wheel scooter. They also tend to be
more compact and generally smaller than 4 wheel scooters.
But for use outdoors where the terrain may be somewhat rough or uneven, then a four wheeled model will provide
greater stability.
2. Do you plan to use your mobility scooter for travel? If you are, then a good investment might be
a portable scooter which is designed to be taken from place to place.
For the most part, these travel mobility scooters are smaller and more compact in size. They also tend to be
lightweight compared to your regular scooter. Portable mobility scooters can often be folded up when not in use,
making it easy to fit into the trunk of a car or the back of an SUV. Storage is easier too.
3. Do you think you will spend a lot of time in it on a regular basis? If so, comfort should take
priority. Look for a seat with a well supported back and lots of cushioning. Be sure the seat is large enough that
you fit comfortably. If it’s too small and cramped, you won’t be happy.
The best scooters come with captain’s chairs with cushioned armrests. Seats that swivel make it easier to get on
and off the scooter as well.
4. Will you need to bring along any medical equipment? If that’s the case, then a heavy duty
mobility scooter might be the best option. They are designed to handle extra weight without losing stability.
They are also larger, so there will be enough room for equipment like walkers, portable oxygen tanks, or
portable ramps. Heavy duty scooters usually come with larger seats so heavier individuals can be accommodated
comfortably.
5. Where will you store your scooter when it’s not in use? If you live in a senior’s complex, an
apartment or condo, or a small house, space may be limited. You may want to consider a smaller folding mobility
scooter in this case.
When they are being used, they don’t take up a lot of space and when not in use they can be tucked away inside a
bedroom or closet.
6. Will you be using your scooter for lengthy periods of time on a daily basis? Some scooters have
heavier duty batteries that hold their charge for longer before needing to be recharged. If your scooter will be in
use for hours every day, you may want to think about the battery pack.
7. Are you going to use your scooter for errands or shopping? If you are, extra storage can come in
handy. Some mobility scooters come with additional storage compartments, handy for carrying groceries and other
items. Some even provide compartments that lock so wallets, purses, and other personal belongings can be secured
while you are out and about.
These are important questions to ask yourself when you are trying to decide on the electric mobility
scooter that is right for you.
